March 25

For my newest model I laser cut the structure of my curtain wall and then built form work and poured a concrete foundation/retaining wall. I'm hoping it comes out nicely tomorrow.

A couple days ago Andrew Jenks from MTV's World of Jenks came to speak for VTU's Speakers series.

It's been a long time since I've posted. But here are some pictures I took when the weather finally got really nice. We were kite flying/fighting on the drillfield.

March 8

My last day in NYC, we went to the Guggenheim. I'm a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and with the gallery we are designing in studio, I thought it was appropriate to visit a world famous museum.

March 7

This is my sisters apartment. I really love the minimalist lifestyle. While I was there we could only sit and eat on the floor. There are no chairs and is virtually empty. Both her and her roommate don't have real beds; they sleep on air mattresses. I think it is really nice to see the bare minimum you need to get buy. They are getting a couch this week, though.

March 6

I went up to NYC the past couple days to visit my sister and watch her perform at Carnegie Hall. Taking the train from Jersey to the city.

March 5 (again)

I'm obsessed with HD video!

March 5

Reservoir's Indoor Drumline has their third competition today in PA. I went to rehearsal this morning and took some pics and a video, which I will upload later.

March 3

For studio we went to visit the construction site of the new dining hall on campus. It is going to have a Sushi Bar, a Carvery, a Jamba Juice, Qdoba and more! I'm so excited. It opens Fall 2012

In the process of designing my curtain wall.

Tuesday was Senior Night for Hokies Basketball. We say goodbye to three great players: Malcolm Delaney, Terrell Bell, and Jeff Allen. Too bad the game was embarrassing.

February 26th

So we decided to camp out all night for College Gameday. Paul Debnam came out around 3am and chilled with us for like an hour just talking. It was pretty legit.

The GameDay set.

We packed the Coliseum tonight!

And then we packed the floor! Knocked off #1 Duke! Go Hokies!!

February 25

In studio this week we had to draw a 3/4"=1'-0" wall section of one of the buildings we were studying. I chose to draw the Kunsthaus Bregenz by Peter Zumthor. It is 100 feet tall above grade with another 30 feet subterranean. Therefore, my drawing was 10 feet tall!

A couple days late due to the extensive filter process, but here is a sample of my pictures of Relay's Best Dance Crew featuring Fighting Gravity on Friday night. I took a total of 806 pictures for the whole event and filtered it down to 225. I will be posting them in a flickr account shortly and will be sure to post that link.

February 9

We had section, plan, and elevation drawings due a couple days later. These are the ones I whipped up and will serve as working drawings throughout the next couple months as my ideas and design change and develop.

Sorry I know I've been posting a lot of Architecture lately, but that's kind of all I have done for the past week and a half or so. Lame I know. I'll be sure to get some new more interesting things up here soon.

February 8

My professor told me I should take pictures of my recent sketch models because they would be good for my portfolio, by showing how I work and come up with my designs.

The first one is 1/16" model in the site plan that helps the study of the galleries structure and some lighting conditions. The site helps provide a presence that the gallery holds in the site.

This is a 1/8" section model that helped me also study structure and how the building met the ground. I also began studying how to circulate through the gallery space. My professor really liked the roughness of this one, because he says, "It speaks a lot to your ideas and the roughness of your design right now. It has a lot of play, and you won't be afraid to rip it apart and tape new things to it as the design develops." Indeed.

January 31

3am on the last day of January. This was literally one of the craziest weekends I've ever had. I did over a week's worth of work in 2.5 days. This was my desk after I finished.

Where I will be spending my weekend for the VSAIA competition. Forgot my nice camera so this is just off of my phone. Hopefully I'll remember to bring it tomorrow morning when I'm here...

January 27

Pretty much my first design for this gallery. The design derived from MC Escher's constant study of two objects working together to become one in the positive and negative space. More specifically, his lithograph "Drawing Hands". We have a 1/16" = 1' scale model due tomorrow. This is the basic form. It is 3 stories of gallery space with a large lobby that can be used as a ballroom. The roof doubles as a sculpture garden (a part of the program). Right now the exterior screen involves a pattern of steel bracing and double glazing creating an air space that helps lower heat gain in the constant pursuit of climate control in an art gallery. I plan on making many changes after our crit tomorrow.

January 25

Today, I took a break from studying the Kunsthaus Museum & the Bechtler Museum (for Building Analysis class) to start making some progress on my gallery project for studio. I have decided to design a museum that only houses MC Esher's work. Today I was just did a lot of research and tried to pull multiple ideas and areas of study from some of his work. My first 5 minute model looked like this. We'll see what comes of the next couple days of work.
